5 minutes with…Ross Baumann

What makes Carpenter Box Financial Advisers (CBFA) stand out from the rest is our people and their commitment to having great relationships with their clients, and with their colleagues.

In our ‘Five minutes with…’ series we meet some of the great team at Carpenter Box Financial Advisers. We posed various sets of questions to people across our firm to provide a glimpse into their lives and perspectives.

This week, we catch up with Financial Planning Manager, Ross Baumann!

Tell us about yourself

I’m Ross Baumann, a Financial Planning Manager here at Carpenter Box Financial Advisers. I was born in sunny Sussex where I continue to reside. Following university, I started my career at MGM Advantage (annuity provider) before moving into the financial advice sector. This began with an independent firm in Burgess Hill before moving closer to home and joining Carpenter Box in 2016.

If you were not a financial adviser what would you have liked to be and why?

I’ve always had a keen interest in sports, so as a kid I would have always dreamt of being a professional sportsman. A lack of natural talent in each of my chosen sports and an eye for food and drink soon extinguished an otherwise promising sports career.

If you could give yourself one piece of advice when you started your career, what would it be?

I think I’ve found most of my progression has come from just giving things a go. So, take more risks and don’t worry about trying something outside of your comfort zone.

Tell us about an accomplishment that shaped your career.

I don’t believe that my career has been shaped by any one accomplishment. I do however think there was a pivotal moment that pointed me towards a career in financial advice. Having worked and enjoyed my time at MGM Advantage, the pension landscape dramatically changed as a result of pension freedoms. This resulted in fewer opportunities and motivated me to take the first serious steps towards building a career. I knew I wanted to remain in the financial sector and a move into financial advice seemed a natural step.

Outside of work, what keeps you busy?

I try to enjoy playing golf and cricket. Outside of this, I enjoy watching most sports (particularly Worthing FC at the home of football), spending time with my nephews and sampling many of the fine restaurants we have in Sussex and beyond.
