5 minutes with…Johnny Mullett
What makes Carpenter Box Financial Advisers (CBFA) stand out from the rest is our people and their commitment to having great relationships with their clients, and with their colleagues.
In our ‘Five minutes with…’ series we meet some of the great team at Carpenter Box Financial Advisers. We posed various sets of questions to people across our firm to provide a glimpse into their lives and perspectives.
Next in our line up, we take time out to catch up with Senior Financial Planner, Johnny Mullett!
Tell us about yourself
My name is Johnny Mullett, I am a Senior Financial Planner at Carpenter Box and working predominantly with the subdivision StarBox to provide financial advice to the New Media Entrepreneurs (YouTube, Instagram, Gamers, etc).
I grew up in Kingswood, Surrey and went to Bradford University to study Economics and Marketing, talk about a change of pace! After university I managed to get involved in social media roles for sports events, such as the 2012 London Olympics and 2015 Rugby World Cup. Which was great fun! I managed to see lots of events and matches using my pass! I then randomly fell into Financial Services at the start of 2017 and worked for a firm based in Croydon.
During my 6 years there I achieved my Level 4 Diploma in Financial Advice and started advising from 2018. I also began my journey to achieve the Level 6 Advanced Diploma in Financial Advice, which I am three exams away from completing.
If you were not a financial adviser what would you have liked to be and why?
For some reason I have always wanted to run a bagel stall, kind of like Subway but with bagels. I really have no idea why but whenever someone asks me this question (or asks me what side project I would like to get involved in). I have always said that I would like to start a chain of bagel stalls! Watch this space…
What key skills are required to undertake your role?
Advice is funny in that each client’s needs are different in one way or another. I believe that in order to succeed you need to be a great listener, understanding and also be able to communicate in a manner which makes complex subjects easier to understand.
I think building strong relationships with my clients is the best foundation to work as hopefully they have already bought into service before I talk about a new idea. Finally, honesty is the best policy!
What is the best professional advice anyone has given you?
Act in a manner which you would like to be treated and do everything with confidence and a smile. I think that these ideas have really made me into the person I am and makes my work enjoyable. I try and apply these ideas 24/7.
What are your ambitions whilst working at Carpenter Box Financial Advisers?
I am hoping to call Carpenter Box home for a significant number of years, I am treating this role as my ‘adulting’ stage of my financial advice career. I would love to create a fantastic client bank of these unique media clients which I can learn from as much as they can learn from me. Ultimately, I hope that would take me to Partner status. From an education standpoint, I would also like to complete my advanced diploma to be a chartered financial adviser.
